So I recently discovered from reading Mansfield Park criticism that for a short while Britten was going to write and opera about the novel. And that he had already cast Lady Bertram’s lapdog (whom I affectionately refer to as Pugsie Wugsie). And now I’ll live with that opera haunting me forever.
I also discovered he created a one-act opera of Noye’s Fludde, based on one of the pageants from the 16th-century Chester Cycle (which I also love). And an opera on Christopher Smart’s poem ‘For I will Consider My Cat Jeoffrey’.
Basically, I need to hear everything Britten wrote right now.
